Adoption can add unique and challenging dynamics to a family. Often it is another
adoptive parent who can relate to these dynamics and provide the support and understanding
needed to sustain family members. As one adoptive parent said, "We speak the same
language."
Support groups can help parents by lending a listening ear, identifying adoption-sensitive
resources, or helping to advocate in the schools for children with special needs.
Many families find resources for respite care through the connections they make
in support groups.
MN ASAP is working throughout Minnesota to start new adoption support groups and
enhance existing groups. If you are interested in starting a support group in your
area or your group needs help with program development, please call Ginny Blade,
Parent Network Coordinator, at 651-644-3036 or 877-966-2727. MN ASAP may have funding
available to help your support group.
